Simple questions for the JD experts. How do you check the engine oil level? Which of the drain plugs on the bottom are used to drain the crankcase? Which drain has the filter? Any help is much appreciated!

THANKS Chris!! I believe I've found it. Didn't want to start taking plugs out without knowing what would come out. Thanks again.

no problem!

If you're not surprised by *what* comes out, you're bound to be surprised by *how much* of it there is!

Chris,

As in what and how much might come out when you drain the transmission instead of the crankcase? Been there, done that!

There is a two-piece drain cock on the belt-pulley side of your tractor's main case. If you crack the top half of this drain open, then add the proper oil thru the crankcase breather, oil will start to drip out of the drain when it's at the right level. Just be sure that the hole in the drain isn't plugged with gunk, of you might overfill the crankcase.

The oil filter is on the underside of the main case, right below where the crankshaft is. The cover for the oil filter looks like an upside down dome with a large bolt head on it. The plug you pull to drain the engine oil is the plug right in front of the oil filter. Be careful when putting a new oil filter in... tighten the bolt just enough to keep it from leaking. Overtightening can deform the oil filter housing and cause low or no oil pressure. This will ruin your tractor.

If you haven't already, go to the Deere dealer and get an operator's manual for your tractor, then go to the farm stor and buy an I&T service manual. they'll answer all these questions for you.
