530 tranny an inherited weak factor?

Seems like I`m not the only one with a 530 transmission that has some undue wear. I`m making an assumption that this is the same transmission as used in the 50 and that it wasn`t quite rugged enough to handle the higher horsepower of the 520/530 tractors. How are the 520-530 transmissions holding up for those folks who strain them in the tractor pulls? John Henry

One of my B's had more gear noise than I liked even after I went through the trans. I toned it down a little by switching to 140 wt gear oil. Since I don't use the tractor in the winter, I'm not worried that it's too thick. While the B-530 trans might not be as overbuilt as the G-730 series, I wouldn't consider it weak. They have held up just fine.

John, those 520-530 tractors have a pretty robust transmission in them. Those 520 & 530s are a good pulling efficient running tractor that were used for everything & by now most have 5000+ hours on them with the original trans gears & bearings, so I think you are just seeing normal wear. Any other brand of tractor would be on their second or third set of gears & bearings by now. The sore spot on the 520-530 is the outer clutch pulley bearing as the inner race of that bearing is the crankshaft & when it wears there isn't a good repair for it.

there's nothing wrong with the 530 transmission design, it is the same as the 520. Abuse and neglect, and not adjusting the bearings have claimed its toll on them. You should be able to rebuild and be okay, there is no way to avoid some possible noise with these type gears.

After 40 plus years of use you should expect a tranny to have what you call "undue wear".
Most were abused by farmers who never check
anything or didn't want to spend a few bucks
to change tranny oil.Almost all of the 40-430
tractors have tranny problems or gear noise.
