My ordered service manual has been back ordered so all I have to guide myself is a parts manual and the patient folks in this forum. I just replaced the kaput sliding 4-6th sliding pinion gear and eliminated the banging noises in those gears. That made me happy. Real happy. But I still have a 6 dog calling gear whine. Meaning all 6 dogs in the valley come running when I`m on the road. My 36 B-N only has a 1 dog whine. Hence my question. Aside from the castellated nuts(cotter pinned),for shaft endplay(thrust) what other adjustments are there to make?

John, the 520 & 530s that I have owned & driven tend to have a whine in 6th gear, some worse than others. If you just replaced the 4-6 sliding pinion & not the 4-6 drive gear there is probably some tooth contact mis-match (gears should always be replaced in pairs if possible). The 6th gear is usually damaged by trying to shift into road gear on the move. That slotted nut is not for end play adjustment it is to be tightened securely to hold the 4-6 drive gear tight to the L/H sliding shaft bearing (the sliding gear shaft end play is controlled by the LH sliding shaft ball bearing & the snap ring on each side of it in the case) "on many of the 520-530s I have had apart the case bore at that L/H bearing has been worn due to the bearing rotating in the case for many years"....The counter shaft has an end play adjustment due to it having tapered roller bearings but that is controlled by shims under the R/H bearing housing & that is inside the 1st reduction cover. If the whine you are seeing has just started after the new gear installation it will probably improve some after the 4-6 gears wear in to a matched pattern, if it has always been there (I would be surprised if it hasn't) the whine is probably coming from the 1st reduction gears due to the crown being worn flat on the drive side of the 1st reduction gear, (does the whine go away on coast & over-run?)

CLOONEY The whine seems common in all gears. Progressivly more pronounced the higher the gear. Loudest when pulling a grade dissapearing at downhill. The mismatching between the old 4-6 drive gear and the new 4-6 pinion gear seems minimal.
The logical problem at this point would be the first reduction gear as you described. I guess I could live with it if it isnt hurting anything or replace the first reduction and pulley drive gear. I`ll call the dealer next week and see whats available. Thanks for your knowledge and insight.
