I'm looking at an aution paper where a smaller farm is being shutdown and they have 2 JD's, a 4230 and a 2020 diesel.

Can anyone help with a little information such as HP on these tractors and rough age?

The 2020 was built between 1965 and 1971. It had the 180.4cid gas engine @ 53.9 pto hp or the 202.6 cid diesel @ 54.1 pto hp. Serial numbers are:
1965-#14502
1966-#14680
1967-#42721
1968-#65176
1969-#82402
1970-#102032
1971-#117500

It was manufactured in LOW UTILITY, ROW CROP, HIGH-CLEAR, and GROVE UTILITY versions. It was replaced, in 1972 by the 2030.

The 4230 was made between 1973 and 1977. This is the tractor which replaced the 4020. You could, briefly, buy it with either a gas 362cid or a diesel 404cid engine. The gas tractor was rated @ 100pto hp, the diesel tested @ 100.3. The "Sound Guard" body (cab) was standard ( you could optionally delete the cab), there were 3 versions, ROW CROP, HIGH CLEAR, and LOW PROFILE. You could get Syncrorange 8/2, powershift 8/4 or Quadrange 16/6 transmissions.

Serial numbers:
1973-#1000
1974-#13000
1975-#22074
1976-#28957
1977-#35588

I hope this information helps.

Thanks to all for the information. The serial numbers were quite helpul. I was able to determine the 2020 was a 68 and the 4230 a 77 model. Now if I can just figure out what they might be worth, I may have a go at one of them. I still haven't decided although the price and condition could influence that decision.

I would avoid that 4230 unless you live where its warm.I have ran a lot of them over the years and every one I ever saw was very hard starting warm or cold.
