I have just finished overhauling my 420T and cannot get it started. When I pull the starter lever it seems like it is pushing exhaust out of the intake as smoke is coming out of the carburetor and if I start with the oil bath air filter on, it spits oil out of the top of it. The head was completely rebuilt by a professional shop, same as the block. I've checked the timing and it is fine as well. Most of the exhaust seemed to be coming out of the exhaust pipe when I first tried to start it, but now when I pull the lever it seems to mostly come out of the air filter. There is a spark and the rest of the electrical system seems to be working. This is my first rebuild so I am very inexperienced and not sure what to check. I would appreciate any advice.

JM, just by what you have said here I would be inclined to check the cam timing. It sure sounds like it is trying to fire through an open intake valve. What kind of compression does it have? Also make completely sure the spark is firing on the compression stroke & not the exhaust stroke.

JM, thought I better tell you how to check the cam timing with engine in tractor...Make sure the #1 (ft) cylinder intake valve is set to .012" then s-l-o-w-l-y turn engine in the running (or cranking) direction until the ft cylinder intake valve just starts to open (the lash is just removed) at this time the D/C mark should line up in the center (or at least within 1/4"-3/8") of the little timing window.
