I was shredding with my 2010 the other day and all of the sudden it started missing. I thought it had a little water in the gas that needed to be worked out. Restarted the tractor and it ran about 30 seconds perfect and then missed and died. Thought it was a carbuerator problem, tore it down,no problems, put it back together, and it ran fine for about 5 minutes. It was then I wised up that the fuel line was clogged. Checked it all the way to the tank and it was fine. Had to pull the cutoff out of the tank and, when I did,gas went everywhere before I could get it plugged. Cleaned out all the fittings, which were almost completely clogged, and now have lots of gas supply. Only problem is the tractor won't start now. I cleaned and dried the distributor thinking the gas had messed it up. Still no start. Bought new plugs, condenser, points, and rotor and still no start. (I'm not sure I've got the points set exactly right.) I'm lost as to what could have made it quit running since the previous problem was a clogged fuel line that is now clear. I still suspect it is electrical but I guess it could be fuel too. I've torn that carbuerator apart 10 times and checked it out. Can't see anything wrong.

Here's a similiar story. A few years ago a friend of mine called me to come and look at his 440 Versatile swather for him cause they couldn't keep it running . it would fire up, run for a few seconds then quit . It seemed to have spark at the wires , so I thought it must be carb.,so I tore off the carb, cleaned it all out and there was no water in it ,so put it back together and it still acted the same . Ended up going to the dealership and got all new everthing inc/wires plugs coil =this a 200 Ford engine = same thing = won't run for more than 30 sec. and poorly at that! So now what to do? I'm supposed to be the mechanic = you know =the guy who's supposed to know it all. So in desperation I come back home and tear all the stuff off my 400=older but has same motor. So I go back up there and out to the field and I take off all that new stuff and put all the old stuff from my old swather .I turn the key .it fires up and runs just fine .So now I start putting on the new stuff=one piece at a time to find out what was really wrong , Ended up that the old coil was weak enough that it couldn't drive the spark through the original carbon wires and when they put all the new stuff on they not only gave him resister wires but resister plugs too. And believe it or not , the new coil couldn't drive the spark through that new stuff. So we took the new wires back= they averaged about 8000 ohms and put on a set of stainless wires that averaged about 1000ohms and the thing has run perfect since. The wires on my older swather were original and were solid wires. This was probably the best self taught lesson I have ever learned in all my years as a mechanic,

Terry, these things are notorious for having carbs that plug easily. Are the plugs wet with gas after cranking? I'll bet that the carb is plugged somewhere too.

I had someone come assist me today. I'm getting spark at the points, checked each point contact separately and have spark through the coil on all point contacts. The coil wire will arc to the frame from about 1/2 inch. I have spark at the plug on number 2 but don't have spark at the plug on 1, 3, or 4. We just scratched our heads and put it to bed for the night!

Terry,

Sounds like you must have picked up some crud in the carb. There are some very small passages that are almost impossible to clean without the right tools. You might try soaking it over night and see if that helps. If not you may need to find someone who can rebuild the carb for you.
