1947 B Troubles

I bought a 1947 B that was sitting outside for 10 years. I put new pistons and rings in and had the head redone. The carb and mag where also rebuilt but the old mag cover was used. New wires and AC 388 plugs installed. The tractor is hard to start. If you turn it over a couple of times and check the plugs the right cylinder is wet and the left is dry. When it starts it blows a lot of black smoke until it reaches speed, but it still smokes a little. The carb is set at 1/4 load and 1/2 idle. It wont start any other way. If you throttle up or down it sputters and produces a lot of black smoke. According to a IT manual the dot and v mark on the flywheel and cover should correspond when left cylinder is at TDC. My dot is 180 from the mark. The LHEO mark is also at 9:00 instead of 3:00. The tractor also shakes when it idles. Is the fly wheel installed wrong, the valve timing off, or carb problems? Please help.

Just wondering if the 180 out meant that the flywheel was on the mark when the intake valve was about to open? In actuality, shouldn't the flywheel mark pass twice for every time the left cylinder is to hit? I would also think the easy way to find TDC is to take out the left hand spark plug and manually turn the motor to when the left side stops building pressure which has to be TDC because the other time the piston is coming foreward the exhaust valve should be relieving the pressure. I usually get a helper to turn the clutch pulley to find it on the electric start tractors. My gut feeling is that whenever she is running so rich on one side there has to be an issue with the carb.

If the flywheel passes the mark twice for everytime the left cylinder hits and it is 180 out to begin with where would it be after 2 revolutions? Please explain to us uneducated people how a single barrel carburator with a single intake manifold can be different for each side.

Wade, to begin with, if the flywheel is on the wrong splines (out of time) you get a fairly bad vibration. The flywheel is purposely out of balance, but the clutch disk on the opposite side is also out of balabce but 180 from the flywheel which reduces harmonic vibration. I would begin by insurign proper flywheel installation so when the left number one piston is at TDC on its power stroke, the flywheel is at TDC and then insure the clutch disk is also in time. Then get the distributor or mag in time and if problems persisit, you could have carb or cam timing problems, but for now, I suspet the flywheel may be off from your description. Easy way to check flywheel timing is to pull #1 plug (flywheel side). Bring flywheel marks to TDC and use a piece of wire to check and see if #1 piston is at TDC. I suspect the flywheel is out of time. This will make the tractor vibrate and run as described. Good luck...
