I have a chance to get 2 model A's at an auction this weekend for probably around 500bucks.
are these things good tractors for really working with on a farm?
Will they pull a disc(what size)?
and can you put a 3point on them(it might have on or did they come witht them back then?

all info would be great.

thanks.

I'd buy them for parts alone at that price!! Yes, they are a good farm tractor but don't expect any of the more "modern" features such as three point, (you can buy them after market) live PTO or Hydraulics. They seem to walk away in a lot of pulling contests I have seen so they are good pullers.

Oh yeah, I own a 1948 A and use it often.

The later model square axle, single stick gear shift are more desirable, and have more power than the all fuel. They have about 35 hp on the drawbar, and were rated to pull 3-14 inch plows. I would think an 8' tandem disc would be about right for this tractor. Don't expect to much for 500 dollars. Russ

As far as for working on a farm, they are a good larger tractor, size wise. Not good for woking inside a loafing shed. They didn't have 3 points, if they have one would be an 800 or 801 hitch, if JD otherwise aftermarket. If they have powertrol you can get after market 3 points. Most don't have live hydraulics so you have to have clutch out to get hydraulics to work. pto isn't live either. If you aren't used to JDs the hand clutch may drive ya crazy. They are good old reliable tractors if in reasonable shape.

What part of the country do you buy two JD A's for $500. By all means if you can get them for that amount, go for it. If you decide that you don't like the hand clutch, or non live pto and hyd., you can always get your money back at that price from one of us eccentric John Deere collectors. Good luck, and I hope you get the fever.
