I have a JD Model A (1946, #578719). I am reinstalling the clutch drive disc and ther are no markings as shown in the service manual (><). I know that the disc must be installed properly because it is counterweighted. Are there any other tricks to this? Like "with piston at TDC, install drive disc with weight at 9 o'clock"?

Thanks,

Fred

I have solved my clutch drive disc problem but started another. I have been told that my "A" was built in 1947 but it is a 1946 model because the "new and improved" model "A" was the 1947 "model A" - Confused?? so am I

This model year thing is not isolated to tractors. A few years ago I saw a really nicely restored '54 Chevrolet truck. Showing off my vast knowledge of trucks and a fantastic memory for the insignificant, I proudly told the owner that I knew it was a '54.

Wrongo!! Chevy had to continue with the old tooling into the '55 model year for a while as the new tooling for the '55 model was not complete.

Same with Deere and the '47 JD A.

Yes, the "new and improved" model was indeed the '47, beginning at serial number 584000 for the pressed-steel frame, square-seat, enclosed-flywheel model. This one was built on 3/31/47, well into the '47 model (and calendar) year.

There are several sources of data for these serial numbers. John Deere's "Brown Book", published in the '70s, states that 578516 was the first 1947 MODEL YEAR tractor. Their "Gray Book", published in 1994, made some corrections, going back to 1942. It says that the first 1947 model A was 569610. I suspect that the 1942 numbers were originally from the calendar year and that the revisions changed them to model year, but I don't know for sure. Back in those days, "model year" change was usually right after a plant shutdown for vacations, probably in August.

In either case, your tractor is a '47.

Looking at the other posts, sounds like the direct answer to the question didn't come up. My only thought to help since I don't know how to tell where the weight belongs is to visit a salvage yard that has one of these parts and compare the relative location of weight drillings and the V mark. Maybe just as easy to buy a good used one if there isn't any easy way to know. If you don't have a salvage yard close by, you might e-mail one of the yards on the net and ask them. Wish I had better information for you.

Fred, sounds like your A is a 1947. 1947 production started with 578516.

1947 started with 569610. His is still a 1947. ALL the John Deere serial number dates are wrong at this site. This site says that my 1943 A and B are 1942's. But I have the paperwork from Deere that states that they are 1943's. 578516 is the first Deere built IN 1947. But Deere starts the model year in late 1946. Hope this helps.

Will P,

You're absolutely right. 584000 began the "late styled" Model A tractors.
