I am in the final stages of the restoration of my 1958 JD 420T and need help. The engine starts up and runs great but when I lower the throttle and kill the ignition it slowly winds down and then diesels for as short as a few seconds to up to 7 or 8 seconds. It seems like it stops spinning in the normal direction and then spins the opposite for a turn or so and then back again, etc., etc. The engine and head have both been completely rebuilt just like almost everything else on the engine. I would appreciate any advice on how to solve this problem. Thanks.

JM, start by running a compression check & see if your compression is too high. Then make sure you are not using extended reach spark plugs or plugs that are too hot. If all ok there you might have a head gasket sticking into the combustion chamber or other object in the cylinder that glows red hot & ignites the mixture in the cylinder. Make sure it is cooling good without hot spots & the water pump is functioning correctly. Try shutting the fuel off to shut the engine down & see if that eliminates the dieseling. If you can't find anything that is causing the problem & it runs good without spark knock try setting the idle as low a possible so there isn't any fuel to keep it running when you shut it off.
