I have a 1947 B and it is hard to start. When it finally starts it acts like it is flooded(lots of black smoke). I have the idel screw turned out 3/4 turn and the load screw 1/4 turn. The mag was fixed because of a bad bearing. I didn't put a new cap on it. The guy who fixed it said it didn't look the best but it would work. Would this cause it to start bad or is it the carburator?

Wade, diagnosing a starting problem over the internet is iffy at best. If your load needle is really out 1/4 turn & it runs good there you might have a carb problem or plugged air cleaner. Try starting it without any choke, or 1/2 choke, try different settings on the choke & throttle to see if that makes a difference. Pull a spark plug wire & see if you are getting a BLUE (not yellow) spark that will jump a 3/16+ gap. Try stopping the engine by turning the fuel off & make sure the fuel is turned off when the tractor is parked. Make sure the air cleaner & wire mesh inside it is not plugged with dirt or old oil (common problem). Has this problem started since the mag was worked on? Are you using fresh gasoline? Old gasoline is hard to ignite.

Make sure the spring loaded choke plate is working properly. Have seen a backfire (caused by a cranky mag) bend or cross these choke control pins leaving the choke on even when the choke rod is pushed clear in. They are hard to start and run like crap this way. Rotate the flat retaining spring off the round metal cap on the choke operating lever & make sure the pin in the choke shaft is in FRONT of the horizontal pin on the choke operating lever. Also make sure that the torsion spring is not broken.

Good luck.

Later.

If the air cleaner is not plugged & the mixture screws are adjusted as you have said, you may wish to check for two problems with your carb: 1) Check to be certain that the carb vent (top of the casting, in the bowl, is not plugged. If it is, it will force raw fuel up the nozzle creating the condition that you described. 2) There is a brass drill plug on the carb stem (in the bol area) that needs to be installed / seated properly. Failure to have in place will cause the condition that you mentioned. I've been there with both issues in the past & they are pesky to diagnose!

Phil, could you explain more about the carb vent and where it is located? What do you mean when you say the brass plug needs to be seated properley? Thanks.

Also - forgot to mention that if the carb is from a rebuild shop or Central Tractor (every carb that I've seen from them is this way) it may have two vent baffles installed (brass expanded metal plug - installed originally on DLTX 71 & 52 carbs - gasoline carbs for "A" and "B") that restrict vent air flow. If so, you'll need to remove at least one of them to get the engine running right.

Had the same problem with my 47 A. The mag was replaced with a good used one, but new cap.
