I have two single bottom Syracuse walk behind plows. They both have "No.20 1878" cast into the frog. The one which I think is newer, was my Great-Grandfather's and has a small John Deere symbol (JD) cast on the frog and "Syracuse Chilled Plow Co." The other, which I bought at an auction does not have the JD and the lettering is a different style, but everything else is the same. Does anyone know anything about these plows or where I could find out about them? When did John Deere aquire Syracuse? Thanks

Jeff, I can't find any number listed that is even close to No. 20 1878 in my list of frogs. Are there any other numbers anywhere on the plow? Does it have wood or steel beam? Bob

I took a second look at the older plow and this is exactly what it says on the beam:
Syracuse Chilled Plow Co. (right side)

_____ _____ __Syracuse, NY(left side)
____A
____2
HORSE PLOW
__NO. 20
___1878

These exact plows are very common around here(north-central Pa), I can think of eight of them (including my two) within a couple miles of my home.

From "John Deere Tractors and Equipment 1937-1959" by Don MacMillan: "The Syracuse Chilled Plow Co. was started as the Robinson Chilled Plow Co. of Geddes in 1876. In 1879 the business was reincorporated under the new name. Deere & Co., needing a chilled plow to fill out its line, found that the Syracuse plows were by far the best in the business. Accordingly, arrangements were made and the Syracuse company was taken over in May 1911."

I hope this helps a little.
