Basic measuring tools question

I need to know what the right tools for measuring machine tolerances on these old tractors would be. I wonder if there is a kit of micrometers and such that would be good for me to get and how much I need to spend on them, and where to find them. Basically I need to know if parts are servicable or if I need to replace them etc. Since Christmas is coming, Santa might need some ideas.
Thanks for your input.
