I found a 4020 D syncro, side console dual hydraulics and dual pto. Sheetmetal is average rear fenders seem small, probably not correct and rotten at the bottoms. It needs rubber all the way around and has a weak engine. Has had a MW turbo on it still has the oil pan. Thanks John Mann

Why don't you forget about the 4020 and look for a real tractor?

If you can buy it for what you are comfortable with and invest the money to fix it to your satisfaction then you know exactly what you have. If the total investment is what you could have bought a supost to be good tractor for you may still be better off fixing it yourself.

It ought to be worth at least 3500-4000 thats what the salvage yards around me (east coast) pay for one that wil half way run with no broken castings. The M&W pan is worth 750.00.

Well, I would figure that a dual valve, console 4020D, in good condition, with a WFE would carry a "Dealer" price of at least $12,500. The tractor you discribed needs tires so figure $350 each for the rears and $100 eac for the fronts, that's $900. You said it has a weak engine, price an overhaul for it yourself, but what would it cost as a guess? $4500? You didn't mention it had a WFE so I am going on the assumption it does NOT have one. Call it $1500 for a used, JD WFE. Perhaps this tractor needs a new seat. $180 from Deere, but you could get the $120 aftermarket one from TSC. Figure on an oil change for the engine AND transmission. The Oil change for the engine would be part of the overhaul, but the tranny probably will need several 5 gal buckets of hygard. Batteries? $200!

You could just about figure that a price of $4-5000 for THIS tractor would wind up being equivilent in price to a "ready to go" tractor priced in the $12,500 range.

You could find quite a few 4020s in the $8-9000 range which already have good rubber and don't need an overhaul. I found a nice, 1968 4020D with 6300 hours, dual valves, fairly good sheetmental, a narrow front and decent tires, for $7500. I have had to buy a replacement starter, two batteries, and will probably get the used wfe next year.

For myself, I wouldn't go over $3000 and I'd try to get it for even less, say $2500. The seller wont like that price much, but if it is you that has to spend the big dollars on an overhaul, tires, possibly a wfe, and who knows what else, I'd leave myself some spending room.

I read a Letter in an enthusiast magazine once, by someone who had made a wonderful purchase---he'd bought a M-M G1000 vista and "only" had to pay $2500 for it. By the time he'd gotten the tractor to where is was "right" and worked to his satisfaction, he had $12,500 in it.

There are a lot of people around this site whom can attest, that it may be a LOT cheaper to buy the already restored tractor. It may not be as much fun, especially if you can do all of the work and WANT to, but it is something to consider.

I hope this is helpful.
