A LOCAL FARMER TOLD ME TO DO THIS WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING, IS THIS TRUE AND IS WHAT IS STATED BELOW APPLICABLE TO A 12V NEG GRND SYSTEM?

To properly polarize that generator, make sure the battery is charged in the correct polarity, then ground the F (fld) post on the generator & momentarily connect battery voltage to the ARM post of the generator

JeffS, the way you explained it is absolutely correct because that works even if you have a bad or missing regulator, the only thing you should do different is NOT have the engine running during the process.

BEFORE YOU CRANK THE TRACTOR, polarize the generator by momentarily connecting jumper wire between gen and bat posts on REGULATOR.
