Diesel injection line broke: Is a patch available?

Hello John Deere experts and diesel enthusiasts in general! I have a 1961 JD 2010 diesel row crop. Fuel began spurting out of the #3 injector line at the fitting that holds it to the injector. I loosened the fitting and discovered a crack in the solid steel injector line, just above the compression sleeve. My question is: Is there a temporary injection line available that I can use until the local JD dealer can get me a replacement steel line? Thanks! Joe Stewart

just a point of info to help you or others with same problem for injection lines, i own a hyds co and one of the pieces we have in our shop is a patented machine for making steel lines of all types, if someone in your area has, is called "tubes @ hoses" they can make you an exact copy if have your old one. we make them regular for customers when not available from dealer.

Thank you for all the replies. The local JD dealer first tried to sell me a #2 (his mistake) injection line for $121.00. I caught the error, and he looks up the price for the #3 injection line: the #3 injection line is "obsolete" and he can't get it. So it looks like I'll have to braze this one and hope for the best, not unless one of you has one to sell me. This is for an early model 2010, before serial #29000. Thank you all! Joe Stewart

Joe:

You might take your old one to a local diesel rebuilding shop that has a good reputation, and I bet they can make you a line or repair yours.

The dealer should be able to special order one in 24 hours if they are available. Costs a little more for the freight. Not worth all the possible hassle with other problems.

Joe:

That steel line has to retain hydraulic pressures in the neighborhood of 2400 psi, and like Allan said, all the lines have to be the same length for best operation.

That said, if one is careful, it can be brazed or even silver soldered for temporary usage. It may or may not ne successful. Nothing but steel will hold the pressure. Be sure you have your lines clamped down properly so that they do not vibrate. That's what causes most line cracking.

I thought that those injectors opened at pressures ALOT higher than that. Maybe I am thinking of something else. Is 2400 right for sure? Just wondering.

FB:

The only book I have nearby is for my 70D, and the breaking pressure on it is 2400 psi. I think that's pretty much in the neighborhood for breaking pressure. Some no doubt are lower, and I'm not familiar with any that are higher, but that doesn't mean there are not.

Joe, if you weld, braze, or heat that line be sure to clean ALL the scale out of the line & even use a small wire brush.. In heating that line, the inside will form a scale & if that gets into your injector you won't be a happy person...

Good point, Clooney!

And maybe follow the wire brush with some phosphoric acid to dissolve any vestiges of flux that might leak through the crack and remain. Then flush with lots of hot water, and maybe the pressure washer, then oil it with diesel fuel again.

Hi Joe,

I doubt it. The length of that thing is somewhat critical for timing purposes. I'd just wait till the new line gets here.
