Need help starting a B, I've checked the point gap, and I'm getting very little spark, chech the continuity of my wires, they're okay, the tractor has been in pieces for about 5 yrs. Should I replace the points and condenser. The points look good though. Should I get a fairly hot spark, I can't see one at all. Also the little terminal on the mag, I asume it is for a ground.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge

Steve, its probably a mag in lne with clooneys question to you. If it were a distributor you would need some sort of switch to turn it on which feeds volatge to the unit, but if it dont have that and only a lil terminal out the front side, thats the mag kill wire which kills the igntion if you ground it. For no more than they cost, I would get a fresh set of Autolite 388 plugs and try her and then a new set of points next. A good cleaning of the cap and rotor tip etc also, then post back and we will go from there. Good Luck Ol John T

Steve, are you sure it has a mag? Wico made a distributor that looks just like a mag & needed 6 volt power run to it to work. The mag will usually have an XD in the serial number & that little terminal that you are talking about would be on a rectangular plate held on with 2 screws. If it really is a mag then that little terminal should not be powered or grounded to work, it should only be grounded to stop the engine. If it is a mag you should replace the points as they are surly oxidized by now & probably aren't making good contact. It wouldn't hurt to clean all the wire terminals & rust from any parts inside & make sure the impulse is working (if a mag it should snap when turning slowly).

I'm pretty sure it has a mag. I'll take my wire off that terminal and give it a shot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a lot to learn about old JD tractors.
