I have the books but I'm still uncertain as to how to proceed with a simple oil & filter change.

Does the filter come out underneath the tractor where the oil filter drain plug is located or up through the breater? Is this a throw away type filter and do I go to John Deere for filter and gasket?

What type oil do you recommend? Can I use a good quality multiviscosity automotive oil? I live in Texas and could be joy riding tha Grandchildren around in temperatures ranging from 40 to 100 degrees and don't want to change the oil more than once per year since it won't be driven over 5 hours a year tops.
Thanks

Since you mentioned the word breather, I wondered if you were confused about the filter looking piece that you remove to add oil. That piece doesn't need replacement unless it has rusted out for some reason. I think it is only there to keep the pressure off the crankcase and insects out. The filter you want is on the bottom of the main case and has that big nut on it. Make double sure you don't over tighten it because it will wreck the filter housing and you won't have oil pressure afterward. Only tighten it a little and see that you have no leaks. It is also good to replace the rubber O ring that the filter cap seats against so you don't need to tighten the nut as much. I think those get sold separately and don't come with the filter depending on where you buy the filter. The oil filter is all paper like material and is disposable.

Thanks and you are correct in that the O ring must be purchased seperately. It cost about have as much as the filter and the dealer says you shouldn't have to replace them at every oil change.

Bud I learned the hard way not to use a deturgent oil in these old tractors. They came out with non deturgent oil. I put deturgent oil in a 1944 that was running fine with non Deturgent. I put in deturgent oil and it cleaned the deposits and stopped up the oil pump. I drove it less than a mile and the engine stuck, so now unless I overhaul the engine I go back with 30w non. deturgent oil. Good luck John.

yes, the big nut next to the drain is the filter.
A new gasket comes with the new filter. I would use straight 20w oil.
