Joe, sounds like you are either fighting a carb problem or you have a leaking or sticking valve or valves. Does the load & idle needle have any effect on engine running (not the backfiring) if the needles have control of the fuel mixture then you probably have other problems like valves or? If there is little or no control with the needles then you might have carb problems. Try running with the choke on a little or 1/2 on & see if that helps. Run it for a while then run a compression test on it (hot with the carb wide open) You might want to try running it without the air cleaner attached in case something built a nest in the air cleaner or stack. You will need to do a little more testing & eliminating for us to pin a backfire down over the internet.

Maybe a valve is sticking open.

For what it's worth, when i got my 1931 D it backfired something fierce. Winded up being out of time almost 90 degrees! It is a wonder it even ran.Recheck your timing would be a good place to start. Remember, old Deere's are not complicated to diagnose. Good
