If the tractor is in running order, Turn the gas on at the bowl under the gas tank. Take it out of gear. Pull the clutch back,[ lever sticking up by your right knee ] Turn key on if it has one. Move throtle lever foward about 1/3, [Top lever on left side of steering wheel] If it is early model there will only be one lever. Mash starter down. [starter is located in front of left brake] May have to pull choke out.[rod coming out of dash on lower left side.] That should do it. If tractor has been setting a long time follow Jerry S advice.

Where is this 1947 John Deere and how much do they want for it. What is the seller's phone number? I will call and tell the seller how to start the tractor for you.

This one might need some more detail about what kind of condition it is in. There are several ways to try to start it. The easiest depends on if it will roll to be pulled or if there is another tractor to use a belt to use from pulley to pulley or sometimes these can be hand started if you have the right tool to crank it with on the flywheel. Makes some difference if it was stored in the dry or not and how long it has been since it was used. You will want to make sure it has new gas in it and it is best if it still has a radiator full of antifreeze if you are in a cold area. Antifreeze helps prevent rusting and if it holds it means it didn't freeze up and break something. Might make sure there is no water in the oil by loosening the plug under the flywheel in the center under the tractor a little. There are pressure relief valves on each cylinder that need to be opened to turn the flywheel over. If the flywheel turns over and the pressure relief valves are hissing nicely, chances are the motor will be something that would end up working. The bigger problems will be making sure the carburator is not clogged with rust and the magneto is kicking out fire to the plugs. If you got fire and the carburator appears to be clean on the inside, that tractor probably has been ran in the not so distant past. I am sure others will have more suggestions for you. My best idea is to get someone around you that has used these tractors to go with you to check it out. THey can tell you more in a minute than I could typing all day.
