Anyone have any experience with loose power steering on a 1020?

I replaced the drag link, which was very loose. Now, when I am driving the tractor, the front wheels seem to drift left and right and move the drage link on its own. If I turn off the tractor and turn the steering wheel, it has about 1/2 of a turn of free play.

How do I tighten this up? I have the complete maintenance manual for my tractor, but the diagrams show so much that I am afraid to disassemble. There's the steering shaft and a piston and a cork screw mechanism.

Is there an easy way to get rid of this loose play?

I am hopeing that some one here can tell me were to get a draglink for the 1973 1020 diesel.

Matthew, Your problem is probably not in the steering sector. The most 3 common areas for this type of problem are: The drag link joints worn which you already fixed. Second is the steering arm at the rear of the drag link that connected to the sector control shaft, this arm will come loose from the tapered end of the steering sector shaft and cause allot of loss motion. To check this and tighten it up there is a round plug just above the clutch pedal that you can pop out with a screwdriver and under it there will be a 5/8" bolt and large flat washer that secures the arm to the sector shaft. It is common for this bolt to work loose and the arm will become loose on the shaft. Just tighten it up and see if it stays tight, if it will not stay tight it has been ran loose to long resulting in damage and wear to the arm and possibly the shaft and one or both may have to be replaced. Usually tightening the bolt will fix allot of them. The third place for sloppy steering on these tractors is the front axles steering joints and the most common spot on them was the bell crank. The bell crank is the three eared steering arm that the drag link and tie rods connect to at the center of the axle. The bell crank bushing wear out and it will wobble around and really make the steering goofy. Look at these areas and see what you find as you will see where your problem lies. Good Luck, Dave W.
