I bought this 1010 diesel at a sale last spring and haven't been able to find out what it is.It is
an RS- Standard frame, but appears to be converted
to a Southern special type tractor.Hope the
picture came across. Thanks.

Hey Ray:

I did some studying buddy. I couldn't come up with much. It is either a Utility or Row Crop Utility. What size tires are on it? Is it any shorter in length or height compared to any other 1010's. The pan or cushion seat was an option as was the exhaust, it could be through the hood or under, like an orchard tractor.

Now, for the front end. It is a square tube, correct? The only one that i saw in the book like that was a utility. I do have a listing of serial numbers so we could see what year it is. The one book can tell me how many of each were produced, model, year, engines, etc. I'll try to help more if I can.

John

It's a standard (RS) according to the serial
number. Some of the 320-420 and a few 330 S tractors were converted to Southern special
tractors with V front ends, different spindles,
and bigger tires.I think that's probably what
this is,although the two cylinder didn't think
any of the 1010's were converted.Green mag said
they had heard of them, but never saw one.I'd just
like to find out,one way or the other.

Their were very few 1010 John Deere tractors made. The tractor looks like it might be a High Crop which was specialy made for vegetable farmers in the south. If this tractor is a High Crop you'd better holded on to it since its worth a nice chunk of cash. To find out what kind it is get the serial numbers checked.

heard of them, but never seen one.Two cylinder
said check the part numbers on axles ect,but they
all come back to a 1010.They did say only one High
crop was made, but it was a gas.

I'm not an expert on the subject but we see a lot of these, or better put, similar one's here in europe. What I would call the nose overhang is quite common and they were build in germany. The 1010, 2010 and 2210 in particular.

Never saw one (not in Wisc) but I did find that the 1010 row crop utility had a shipping wt of 3746# and sold new for $3,299. The 1010 "Special" row crop utility had a shipping wt of 3411# and sold new for $2,728. Tire size was the same on both tractors. As was most standard equipment. A parts book would tell the real differants between the two.

The price book I have dose not list the "Special" as a diesel, only in gas, so if not one of a kind, it is rare. The prices in the above post were comparing gas to gas. The differance in price gas to diesel on a 1010 RCU was $423.

Mike, I've seen several 1010 Standard diesels
over the years, and have seen production numbers
of less than 800 built.

I had to dig and dig deep, but I found a several permotion ads from the 1960,s for the 1010 and the 2010. One pix showes the Special and your tractor is differant. From what I can tell from the ad pixs is it looks like the spindals and Knees from a 2010 row crop(tricylce) optional wide front is on your tractor. I "eyeballed" off the hight of the knees as to the tire hight on both tractors in the ads and your tractor. What are the rear tire size? The 2010 had a 11.2 x 36 tire avaible. Yours is RARE indeed! Congratulations.

It has 38 inch rubber. The part numbers off the
castings on the axle and housing say 1010.Some
of the other numbers say 420 -430 -1010.

NO,I did not mean the whole wide front. Just the knees (The upright parts,) welded to a 1010 wide front.end at the end bolster.

Anyone with a parts book?

Don't have the part numbers here, but everything
I checked was a 1010 number,including the knees.
Nothing is cobbled up or welded.I can get the numbers,if you want to see them.

I am sure you have a factory special order tractor. And J.D. most likely use parts on hand. this is why I think instead of putting on 1010 spindals on the W.F. when it was built, J.D. put on 2010 row crop spindals, or spindals for a 420 430 special. I have looked it the 420 430 parts book and it showes 10-38 rim part# JD3004T that was on the 420 430 HI-CROP, but I can't by your pix and the pix in the 420 430 parts book if the hub is the same. If you can get parts books for a 1010, 2010, and the 420,430 parts book and do some studying
