Just changed out the Strongbox batteries in my 2840.Got nine years out of them. How come they lasted that long when all my other Strongbox batteries quit about a year after their warranty expires?

In 1987 I purchased an ES 830 with 4 six volt Farm & Fleet batteries that were new in 1985. The batteries are still starting the 830 even though they are almost 15 years old. But they get very little current drain as that 830 starts almost instantly even when cold. I do disconnect the center ground when the tractor is not going to be used for two weeks or more as these 24 volt 830's will cause the batteries to discharge over winter. So I can't complain about 15 years on Farm & Fleet batteries.

Phil speaks well of the Delco & while I'm sure some have had troubles there too, as a testimonial, my Dad just replaced his Chevy trucks original equipment Delco this past AUGUST. Dad bought the truck brand new. It is a 1990 WT series, two wheel drive. Build date is October 1989. While he was impressed by the Delco's performance, the pocketbook prevailed & it was replaced with a Wal-Mart battery.

Later.

Temperature, vibration, charge rate amps, system voltage, long haul or stop/start duty, cranking demand current, time in dealership spent wet charged but unused & acid strength at beginning of service. Some dealers only fill the cells partially full, charge, then add water. If a dry battery is filled to max level with acid & charged hard the 1st time, they can slobber electrolyte. An easy way to avoid hostile customers with dripping batterys.

When working at a Deere dealership, I read all about the specs of the StrongBox and how 'great' of a battery it was. As it turned out, most would do exactly as you mentioned, quit just after the warranty expired. I have owned several (only because they were supplied at cost)and found them to last no longer (usually less) than their 'generic' equiv. I have always maintained my charging, ignition and fuel delivery systems, along with having tight engines, neither of which made any difference. Out of frustration one morning with my Puller ("G") I hoisted an 8 yr. old Delco from my mother's minivan - Started it better than that 900 CCA Strongbox ever did.....
