Does anyone know of a good book that shows how the engine/clutch/transmission /drivetrain etc on a 2 cylinder tractor is connected? A sketch that shows how the engine output connects to the final drive would be great.Would also like to know how the brakes work since the drums are not on the axels like on my Allis's.
Thanks for any leads.I just purchased a 36 A and it has me baffled.

Except for the uprights (L,M,MT, etc), the basic JD 2 cylinder powertrain design is the same from beginning to the end of production. You should be able to find a shop manual on some model. It doesn't have to be an "A". Also check around your area for collectors, mechanics, or farmers who have owned a 2 cyl. John Deere.

I&T shop manual service JD-4 might help you. I was wondering what you are having trouble with?

No trouble. Just interested in the design. For instance what do the brakes hold since their not on the axels? etc.
Thanks

get the parts manual from JD on your tractor; it has a lot of exploded pictures that will help you a lot, bout 18-20 bucks. The sevice and operators manual are a waste of money

I have the parts catalog from John Deere but can't find any pictures showing how the engine transfers power to the wheels. There are exploded pictures of sub assemblys but nothing showing how they interconnect at least as far as I can see.

you have to visualize it in your head a bit. if you have experience with other tractors then this should be almost 2nd nature.

The parts catalog is PC674(01FEB60). You can have your dealer order it or call 1 (800) 522-7448 - have your credit card handy.

I agree with Mike on the other manuals - SM2000 (the Service Manual) is pretty generic from what I hear. The one for my '41 B was excellent, however.

Thats the Parts Cat. that I have but I sure don't see an exploded view showing how power is transmitted from the crankshaft to the transmission etc. Page 8 shows the crank. What does gear #23 mesh with?

Surely someone provides a schematic of the entire drivetrain showing how everything meshes together?

i have a 1944 copy of farm implement news "buyer's guide and implement repair directory". inside the front cover, there is a full page add for john deere "two cylinder engine design". there is a outline of a john deere with the flywheel, crankshaft, pistons and rods, and clutch pulley, first reduction gear, transmission gears and shafts, bull gears and axels, all bold and dark that shows how the whole thing goes together and works. the brakes arent bold though. i'll bet there was a big poster with the same thing at one time. i'd llike to have one of those!

Thats exactly the kind of view that I would like to see. Surely someone has included a diagram like that in a book?
Thanks

My mistake, left one letter out. I just resent it. The pully gear drives the input gear on the tranny. The tranny output gear drives the differential gear. Hope this helps.
