I would like to replace the felt seals and bearings but I cannot get the bearing cones to slide off the shaft. I don't want to break something I can't replace.Dust shields will move.
Thanks
Marty

Marty, are you trying to do this in the tractor? If so they can be a pain. You might try removing the snap ring that holds the cup in & see if the spring pressure will push the cup & cone out for you.(will the spacer come off?) It will have to come out to replace the rear felt anyway. If the shaft is out of the tractor you might try pulling the rear gear & dust shield & sliding the shaft out the front, bearings & all, then you can work on it easier without the water manifold in your way & use a press on the ft. bearing easier. If the shaft is out I have also had some luck slamming the front of the shaft down on a piece of plywood to dislodge the ft. bearing but if the bearing cone has been spinning on the shaft for years or the spacer is stuck that probably won't work. One thing to be careful of is not to damage the front threads that the nut goes on as it bends & strips easily.

The bering cone is not spinning. It is frozen tight on the shaft. The berings are a little loose and the shaft throws greese all over the verticle water pipe. Should I try to salvage what I have and use a stiffer grease rather than damage something trying to get it apart and drive myself NUTS.?

Hi Clooney'
The whole thing is sitting on the floor right now. The fan assmbly is off but I cannot get the shaft out of the water pipe that goes from top tank to cylinder. There is a beveled bering near the gov end and a bering cone right behind it that I would like to get off. There is also a cone on the other end that prevents me from pulling the shaft out the other way. I am afraid of destroying the cone during removal and not being able to replace . I replaced the berings in the stearing box and Timkin wanted 325 dollars for the race. Luckily the race was salvageable. Just don't want to cause too much damage. Thanks Marty

I meant Beveled Gear on the gov end and not beveled bering and then a bering cone behind it.. I can't get either one to budge.

Marty, that ft bearing is probably frozen to the shaft from spinning & then galling. Try standing the whole shaft (water Manifold & all ) on end (you might need some help) then lift it about 6"-8" & bumping the front of the shaft down on a piece of hard wood or plywood. Sometimes that will move the ft bearing. If I remember right those bearings were about $30.00. To remove the rear you will need an arbor press or good 3 jaw gear puller & possibly a little heat (use very little heat), pull the gear, then the bearing race then tap the dust shield off. If the front is just loose try using a little piece of pipe & tapping the inner bearing cone to the rear, once it moves it should tighten the bearing up when the fan is reinstalled, as it is probably hung up at a point that leaves too much play. If you have the shaft off the tractor you should be able to slide the bearings, spring & all out the front of the water manifold once the snap ring holding the ft cup is removed, then you can try to tap the bearing forward & off the shaft, you will probably bend the big flat washer at the rear felt area but it is easy to straighten once the whole ft assembly is removed. One thing to remember is once you start pounding on that ft bearing spring assemble you are kind of committed & should follow through & remove everything to check for bent washers & ruined felts.
