I have a diesel gator and appears to have a preheat problem. Light on dash comes on for longer times as needed in cold weather but doesn't seem to help with starting on colder mornings. Is there a check I can do on glowplu

jimbob:

Does your Yanmar/Gator have glowplugs ? I thought it just had that single air pre-heater unit just above the intake manifold.

If that's what it's got, you can probably take off the hose and see if it's getting hot. A drop of oil on it will allow it to smoke to tell you it's warm. On my 855, all that thing does is give a slight temperature rise to the ambient air...I don't think it helps all that much, but every little bit helps I guess.

Mine rumbles to a start when it's cold, but I live in north Florida, so it's rare that it gets started below 20 F.

First, check for power at the glow plug itself, Have someone hold a test light on the tip where the wire is attached, cycle the switch to check for power. if no power, you are gonna need to do some wire checking

Put an test ammeter in series with each glowplug supply lead. 12V maybe applied to the plug but no heating will occur if it's open. An ohmmeter can get fooled on occasion measuring resistance on a cold plug that open circuits as soon as it heats a little.
