3010 won't go in gear right

Dad's 3010 has this problem that it doesn't like to go into 3rd and the first reverse all the way so it grinds the gear if you arent careful. To put it in all the way, we have to slam the shifter two or three times and then let the clutch out slowly to make sure it held. What will we have to do to fix this? I know it is fairly common but not sure if we have to split the tractor or if we can fix it without that. I appreciate any and all help.

If the tranny goes into gear OK in 5th and reverse, I would suspect the 'A' range gear. This required splitting the tractor at the transmission split, removing the final drives and the differential carrier to fix.

A more common problem is the top shaft (hi-lo-reverse). If going into reverse is the biggest problem, it sounds like the reverse shift collar and/or gear have the teeth worn. The top shaft removal requires splitting at the transmission split and removal of the rockshaft housing and charge pump. This is not nearly as big a deal as the bottom shaft.

Jerry, start at the shift quadrant, are the holes worn at the clevis's and pins, check the quadrants themselves for bushing wear. Then check the shifter rods and the arms on the transmission for worn holes etc. then put the shifter in -3-5-7th gear (I use 5th) make sure the transmission is in the detent, pull the pin at the shift quadrant and adjust the rod to fit the pin. Then look at the lock on the quadrant and make sure it travels back and forth with no binding , if it binds adjust the clevis so it doesn't. now chech the other stations to make sure they are ok. If the tractor still rakes teeth then you will have to split it and replace the syncronizers and shifters , and the shift drums. This is not cheap to do but you will probably have to bite the bullet. The shift quadrants ,shift lever pivot and quadrant shaft should be replaced with parts from the 1969 side console tractors as they were tightened up quite a bit. hope this helps. Don

is the shift quadrant,on the dash, really lose and sloppy,or good and tight.if its lose, then it needs to be rebuilt to get the slop out.if its tight,i would think the tractor will have to be split, and the 3rd gear and the shift collar replaced.you might jack up both sides of the rear and put it in 3rd.remove the pins holding the shift rods to the levers,on the right side of the trans, check the position of the levers, and feel if they are in the detent location.if they move into the detent when the pin is removed then the problem is in the shift linkage.if the levers are in detent then start the tractor and let the clutch out.if it jumps out of gear or grinds, the gears are worn.

It doesn't jump out if you really have it in gear so it sounds like maybe we need to fix the linkage from what you mentioned because there is some slop in the shifter. It seems to do this more in third and the first reverse but then again those are what we use mostly.
