The only way I can see to remove my Model D crankshaft from the block, is to take off the counter-balance weight(the one bolted to the crank inside the block). The nuts on mine are welded to the weight!. Is this normal? Has anyone ever removed a D crankshaft with the weight still attached to the crank? How do I get this crankshaft out of the block? Also, who sells the best rings for original pistons, who sells the best gasket kits, and I need rod and main bearings. The bearings are babbet over bronze. are there better bearings available? Thanks!

Jeff, that crank should come out without removing the counter weight.. It isn't easy & everything will have to be removed that will interfere with it.. You have to kind of twist & wobble it around but it will come out.. I usually pull those by myself so I use a couple of old heavy duty V belts & a couple of come-along's, one inside the crankcase & the other just outside the crankcase. If you use them correctly you can hang the crankshaft from those belts & work it out.

~The counter weight nut welded to the bolts is normal [you wouldn't want that big piece of steel coming loose would you?]

~I usually get my rings from Deere or Otto Gas Engine Works>Link

~I don't know about best gaskets, on those old D's you kind of take what you can find.. I usually use Deere or Kevin at Farm Power Restoration [610-854-3668] Kevin has a lot of special hard to find parts for those old D's.. [have him send you a catalog] He also has a web site now >Link

~On>Link the bearings?.. Again you will probably have to take what you can find,,once you start shopping for parts for that old D you will become less picky & start being glad you can at least find what you need..
