This afternoon I needed to move some of the tractors around to get to at something in the back of the shed. I started the one 1020 up and let warm up while I started the other one as they are both cold natured. When I went to move the one with the loader, the power steering didn't seem to be working, you could steer it but it was stiff. The hydraulics worked. Is there a seperate resevoir for the PS. It was fairly cold, low 20s, but we used it last winter in colder weather. I really need to get a manual for these tractors. As always, any help is really appreciated.HJ

Yes,warming up the oil Is a good idea. There is two drains on the bottom of the tractor. It takes aprox. 10 gal. of oil to do a complete change. On most of the 1020's you can access the sump screen from both sides of the tractor.by opening both sides of the sump screen you can tap the screen out. Make sure you keep everything clean. Its important.

The power steering don't have a seperate resevor. What you should do first is change the transmission filter and oil. Use John Deere oil it's the best in the winter. Old oil and plugged filter may work in summer, but not in winter.

Make sure while you are changing the transmission oil and filter you also remove and clean the sump intake screen. This is offen missed.Good luck and happy new year.

Yes i do clean the intake screen, would you believe that in a 4020 service manual, it don't even show where the intake screen is or say it should be cleaned.
