My Jd 1020 power steering goes away every now and again. You might be driving along and have power steering but then the next time it is gone. Th e position of the steering wheel doesn't affect it. This model has a pump located on the front of the engine for the power assist steering. The main hydraulics on this tractor seems to work fine. Is there a filter just for this pump. How should I approach this problem?

There is a pressure control valve that is located on the lower right of the transmission case. It gives priority to the oil supply going the power steering. It makes sure that there is always sufficient pressure for the power steering. It could be faulty or just hanging up. And since the power steering is made up of steering valve assembly (in the steering column), steering linkage and pressure control valve,(that's all) that valve could be the problem.

My guess is you have a problem in your pump, maybe stroke control valve is hanging alittle or your system pressure is to low or worst case, your pump is just going weak on you.Check your filter and the level and condition of your fluid also.
