How do I tell the difference between a 953 and a 963 running gear? The serial number is gone. When did they make these wagons? Thanks for the help.

The 953 was the standard running gear for many years. It came standard with a fixed bolt on bolsters. Rocking bolsters as well as spring bolsters were options. Hay racks didn't require rocking or spring bolsters. Rocking bolster curbed the twist of the type box installed. Springs gave a better ride but were tall and not as stable. Deere finally made: 943 (light weight);953 (standard weight); 963 (heavy weight) before introducing the wide track wagons:1064,1074 series. The axles are heavier on the 963 than the 953 and the reach pole connecting the front and rear axles was doubled. Made of spring steel and one inside the other. The hitch was heavier with heavy duty clevies. Don't remember what the serial # said. The 943 had 4 bolt wheels. The 953 had 5 bolt. I beleive, but am not sure, the 963 has 6 bolts. Thats all I can tell you. The 953 was the wagon of choice gave Deere the edge in the wagon business. They had straight spindles and tracked straight behind the tractor or tow vehicle.

The most common difference is that most of the 953s had rocking bolsters, while most of the 963s had a 10 leaf spring under the bolster. I say "most" in both cases, but there were also overlaps between the two models as far as features are concerned.

Contact me by e-mail and maybe I can give you more information.

Clayton, as hard as it is to believe, I might have hit a wrong key on the e-mail address.

Try it again - I was very careful when I put it in this posting this time.
