1943 JD A Fuel Question

My dad and I are trying to rebuild my grandfather's '43 "A". It has two fuel tanks....

One small, and one large. The tractor has a selector nob between each tank and one is labeled with an F and a G. We would ask my grandfather, exactly if it was a diesel started with gas or if it was just gas, but he died before we could ask him. We know that he ran it on gas only when he ran it, but we're worried about damaging the thing since it is a realy antique, and it has some sentimental value.

The other question we have is if it would be better to keep it as a 6V w/generator, or to convert it to a 12v/alternator. We converted a 1964 JD 440 and it would be easy to perform, and put it back to original condition.

Thanks,

Matt

My father owned a 1944 A for several years. He never used anything but gas in it. The small tank we used when the large tank ran out. Saved walking somewhere to get gas. The early styled A's came out with a six volt system. The six volt system was grossly underpowered. They were much more satifactory with a twelve volt. My brother-in-law put a starter on Dad's A. He used the 12 volt system. I have a 1948 B I converted to a twelve volt system, using an alternator. I have never regretted it. You can buy an alternator with built in voltage regulator for less than a six volt regulator will cost you. Just my thoughts.

How did you wire it for the 12 volt?

Don't try to run diesel fuel in it. You should also visit the Deere dealer and buy an operators manual for that tractor and check out some other manuals for it too as that will be a good investment for you. Will save you some real headaches.

F is for Fuel. Distilate, kerosene
G is for gas. Gasoline, used to start the tractor

Use to start them on gas and get them hot and run cheap fuel in them and not that expensive gas.

Worried about damaging the thing since it is a realy antique. These thing were made to work. As long as the motor runs good and sound. Don't worry.

Please leave it 6 volt. I don't know much about this as all my Deere's are hand start with mags.

My 2 cents.
