Problem with propeller shaft replacement

I just split my tractor to replace the propeller shaft that I broke on my tractor a couple of months ago but there's a problem. The shaft broke close to the flywheel (I was able to remove about 2 feet of it) and the remainder of it is stuck. There is some kind of structure there in the center section and the remainder of the shaft is stuck at that point. Is there something I forgot to do? The service manual does not mention anything other than removing the pin and washer at the transmission and then pulling out the shaft. I would obviously like to avoid dismantling the center section from the engine if possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Joe, if I understand what you are saying, it sounds as if the splined part of the shaft is still in the clutch disc and flywheel pilot bearing. Remove the bolts around the pressure plate and remove it and the clutch disc. You should be able to get the broken part out then. When re-installing the pressure plate and clutch disc--use the new propeller shaft as an alignment tool while bolting down the pressure plate. Make sure you keep the clutch disc turned the way it came out. Wayne.

Oh yes, you will have to remove the center section to do this, its not a problem, only 6 bolts I think.

Thanks Wayne. I will have to re-think how to block things up if I do this. I was hoping that the splined end at the clutch would be lose enough to pull out from the transmission side since the manual indicated that the propeller shaft could be replaced by separating the center frame from the transmission. I am still unclear why the splined end at the clutch is stuck unless something jammed when the shaft broke. I may ask for more help on this as I get a little further into it.

If I am understanding your problem, and you just have it seperated at the trans. there will be no way to get the short broken piece out, unless you can turn the tractor up on end and shake it,Ha. Also it could be jammed and may have done some damage to the clutch disk or pressure plate. I would inspect the fingers on the pressure plate and other parts before assembly. Also if you have any way to support overhead, you can run a nylon strap underneath the oil pan and with a come-a-long, support the engine half.Let me know if I can be of any help. You can e-mail me if you want. Wayne.
