My JD 500c was working fine two weeks ago when i did some snow with it. The temp. was low before the last storm and i left her warm up a little longer. The bucket was slow to respond and the powershift trans would not work in any gear. For the first time i noticed foaming on the dip stick there doesn't appear to be any water in the hydro fluid. I left her sit for a while, restarted her. There appeared to be an occasional growling noise and slight chatter on lifting the bucket, and the rear wheels did turn briefly. I have heard about the sump screen and was wondering if some water got in it the trans or pump and froze?

There is a suction screen in the transmission that all oil used by the machine passes through...if it is clogged with years of debris it could cause your problem...especially with thicker cold oil...Without looking at a parts book, I cant remember which side it is accessible from...but it is removeable and cleanable...after draining the transmission...

...after pondering it a bit ...i believe there is a plug on the left lower side of the transmission case below the filter canisters...the suction tube for the transmission pump should be on the opposite side of the case ...

Thanks for all your help. Strange maintenance pulled on this JD 500C. NO dirt or shavings in drained fluid, Little dirt in suction screen, Both filters were CLOGGED & DETERIATING. New filters & HYGUARD = running like new

FYI: Suction screen is directly behind hydro filters. 2" plug with fitting in center.
