I picked up a 3 bottom plow which is painted JD green (old paint not a new paint job) however, I am not sure if it is a JD plow or not.

On the beam middle plow, in 1" block lettering is the number in 415-14. It is a 14" plow and the shares are held on with 3 bolts.

I also have the some of the piece part casting numbers. i.e. the clamp that holds the colter assembly if thoes will help.

Is there a place to look for serial numbers or other identifying features?

Jeff

Jeff,

Is your plow a 3 point hitch plow? Deere made a model 415 plow which was a 3 pt. 2 bottom plow with safety trip standards. The brace at the rear which angles between the two beams would have had lettering that would be close to 1" block lettering.

Deere also made a model 416 plow which was the same plow, but with 3 bottoms.

If yours says 415 and is a 3 bottom plow, what might of happened is this. Deere made a kit to convert a 415 plow to a 416 3 bottom. Therefore yours may have be converted and still have the original 2 bottom decals on it. I have a 416 plow the I converted to a 2 bottom, so mine still says 416 when it is now really a 415.

The 415/416 plows usually had a lever on the right side ( as you are at the rear of the plow facing forwards). Casting numbers on the coulter clamps would be G705A on the inner piece and B305A on the outer piece. There are no serial number tags on them anywhere.

Hope this helps you some,
Dave

I think we need some more part(casting) numbers in order to identify this plow. Is it a tag along or integral plow? Is it a truss or forged beam type? Do you see any JD logo's cast into any of the parts? If this is a forged beam plow there should be beam identifying numbers following the words John Deere stamped into the cast beams.

I do not know the difference between a tag along and a integral plow. It is a 3-point with no pnuamitic wheels. Just colters and the rear, soil edge, packing wheel.

The frame is made of forged beams bolted together to make a truss. The beams have the number A11246 stamped into the top. No JD name painted, decal, or stamped that I could see.

That is a JD 3 point plow model # 416 or 416A. They were made in 12, 14 or 16" bottoms. Were first made in 1955 to 1959. The A versions were made from 1959 on. Or it is possible that this was a model # 415 or 415A two bottom JD integral plow that has had a third bottom added to it. The model 415 was made from 1955 to 1959 and the 415A from 1959 on.

The A version had an increased trip back standard vs a regular trip back standard.

The parts Catalog for this plow is PC 459 available from JD Pubs in reprint form for $30.00

Hope this helps.

Jeff,

It was built in 1915, according to the article.

The only reference I could find from some Green Mag articles a couple of years ago mentioned a No. 3 plow which was available as both 2 and three bottom. The beam nunbers mentioned were 415 and 416, no mention of a third beam. Also no mention of when this one was made.

I can scan a fuzzy picture of one and e-mail it to you.
