I'm looking for a loader tractor and found a JD utility with loader that I just looked at. It's a yellow industrial model and has been well used (abused) and needs lots of TLC but runs well and the loader and hydraulics all seem to be in good shape. There's no vin tag and the owner doesn't know for sure what model/year (he just got it as part of a deal with another tractor), but someone who looked at it told him it was a 2010. It's a 4 cylinder gas. It doesn't have a 3-point or pto, and looks like it had a backhoe on it at one time. There's weights on the back now where the backhoe bracket is and a ball hitch welded on. Here's my impressions from driving it:
The brakes are worn or way out of adjustment, they just barely brought it to a stop.
The wiring behind the dash panel looks like a mess with wire nuts holding splices together.
Back tires (28") have lots of weather checking and about 60% worn, fronts are 16" light truck tires.
The steering is sloppy, mainly from a loose tie rod end and other bolts loose in the steering linkages.
The clutch pedal comes all the way to the top before engaging, is this an adjustment or is the clutch at the end of it's life? This would be a major concern to me.
There was a noise in the clutch area when it was idling in neutral which went away with the clutch depressed.
From what I can tell it only has 3 forward & 1 reverse gear, that seemed odd to me.
There wasn't a piece of tin on it that wasn't straight or had been welded, and some was missing around the engine, although that's of little importance to my decision to buy.
The loader frame looked good with no cracking that I could tell and all the hydraulics worked well.
I'm only planning on using it to put in the driveway where we're building this summer, help clear the area for building, and then will keep it around for snow removal. He's asking $2800. What's everybody's opinions? Thanks!

Joe,
Judging from what you said about it. I would tend to go along with everyone else here. If you were wanting a restoration tractor, that might be another story but sounds like it would be a near total rebuild. Don't know about the parts availability on these things. I agree on the recommendation to go for a 3000 or 4000 series, they would be better and more valueble.

Do yourself a favor and walk away----by the time you put this tractor in decent shape, you could buy a JD 300 or JD 400 tractor, with a much better engine, hydraulics, power steering, 3-pt hitch, etc, for the same money. Parts support from Deere on the 2010 is nearly non-existent. They weren't very good when they were new, and that was a LONG time ago.
