Have an opportunity to buy JD 420 narrow front, would use to brushog and move round bales. Don't know the s/n or year, my questions did they have live power ? Steering wheel is horizontal (like my 49 B)does that indicate early or late.Bottom line, tractor needs paint(straight, but rusty), tires good, comes with 5' brush cutter, 2 bottom plow, and grader blade. $2500.00 buy? pass? think about it? Thanks Jerry

This is a very good tractor that has stood the test of time. I doubt it moving many round bales though, especially if they are 1800 pound bales. Even if they are 1000 lb. bales that will still be a lot on that little lift. I have a neighbor who has a 3000 Ford and uses it to move hay and he has to back up all of the time with his. Thanks, Ray Castleberry, Evergreen, Al

Found out it's a 4 speed, really wanted LPTO, but I will go look at it anyway. I agree about too light to handle round bales, but I think it would load them in my horse trailer Jerry

Jerry, I guess by now everyone knows I am a big fan of the 40-420-430 series. Been using them for 45 years. They are my favorite for small farm use and the foot clutch (just can't get used to that hand lever,ha) The price sounds fair and what you want to use it for is ok, except I don't know about moving the round bales, even if the powertrol is strong enough, the tractor is not heavy enough, especially the tricycle front. If you can find the 3-piece front weight set, that will help and water the tires, or it is going to stand straight up with you.

personally, I like the 420/430 W for general use and mowing as the center of gravity is more stable. The MT/420/430 tricyle seems more unstable. However just one man's opinion.

There are actually three different versions of the 420:
-the 1956 "all green" 420
-the 1957 "straight steer, green & yellow" 420
-the 1958 "slant steer" 420
You also hear them refered to as phase I,II and III.

Many people regard any of the 420s as desireable collector tractor, so a running 420 with the listed implements sounds faitly cheep. If the Plow is a John Deere 412,415 or perhaps 416, fully mounted three point, those plows are very nice and would be the "matched" plow for the tractor. I have one, model 412, 2x14" and it is really great for doing gardens and such.

I think the previously stated info about LPTO regarding 4 and 5 speed trannys is correct also.

Go for it!

I have a '57 420S which I use with a bush hog.
The PTO is live on 5 speed transmissions and not live on 4 speed trannys. If it doesn't have a live PTO you should get an over run clutch on the attachment for safety reasons.

Hi,

The live PTO option did require the 5-speed transmissions, however, not all 420 series tractors with 5-speed trans had live PTO. Most of them had standard PTO due to the extra cost of live. Plus, if the machine has a direction reverser (also requires the 5-speed) then it cannot have live PTO. The two options were mutually exclusive.

Concerning the purchase price of that 420 you're looking at. My uncle in Missouri just bought a tractor like your describing but he didn't get any attachments. He paid $1000 and I thought that was awfully cheap. He's been working for JD 40 years and knows lots of folks with these old tractors stuck in the back of their barns.

The straight steer you have would mean it's either a 56 or 1957 model. The 58 had a slant steer. Live power?? Hard to say, but they did have live PTO in those years. One way to check, and this isn't a guarantee, is to look at the attachement bolts on the left and right side of the center frame. There are two on each side and they are outside the clutch housing area. If the top bolt on each side have no head but rather a square end, chances are it's a live power clutch. Have the seller hook up the bushhog and use it prior to buying. That should tell you if it has live power, unless the clutches need adjusting.

Is the plow a JD model??? Where are you located?
