I have a 1937 "A" that is making all kinds of racket from the fanshaft. My question is would oiling help the problem? And does the fanshaft housing contain oil so that the shaft is oiled? Thankyou in advance! Hoosier Mark

Mark, the usual cause of a noisy fan shaft on the old "A" is worn bearings,or seized ft. bearing on the shaft not allowing the tension spring to maintain the correct preload on the rear bearing, or worn fan drive/driven gears. In some cases worn governor bearings or worn governor drive/driven gears could cause a fan shaft noise.
~Grab the fan blade (engine NOT running) & try to try to turn it within it's play, if it has more than about 2"-3" of movement at the tip of a blade you have wear on something from the cam to the governor to the fan gears to the bearings. Then try to move the fan/shaft in the fore/aft direction, if there is any movement in that direction the front bearing is seized or completely worn out, the spring is defective or the rear bearing is worn so bad the spring can't maintain tension on the rear bearing.
~The front fan shaft bearing was greased from the factory with hi-temp grease & the pipe plug should be removed , a grease fitting installed & the bearing re-greased about every 2 years in normal use. ~The rear fan bearing is oiled from the same sprayed engine oil that lubes the governor. The fan tube could very well have some engine oil in it due to the fact there isn't a rear fan shaft seal in the old "A's" & oil usually will enter the tube.
~If the fan movement in either direction doesn't feel too bad you should probably pull the mag from the governor & see how much movement you can feel in the governor drive flange, if much fore/aft or lateral movement is found the governor has worn bearings or the R/H governor bearing bore in the case is worn oversized.
~Removing the fan shaft is a real pain on the old 2-cylinder tractors & usually either the governor & fan shaft has to come off together or the radiator has to be moved forward. In your case due to the fact of not knowing where the noise is coming from, the governor & fan shaft should come off together.
~If you dis-assemble the fan shaft from the governor or pull the L/H governor cover, the gaskets under those parts are actually shims & need to be re-installed in the original thickness, or wear & noise will probably result. Also don't forget the oil line attachment on bottom of governor case.

Mark, on the fan end of the shaft, there is a bearing housing with a plug on top, that housing is sopposed to be full of oil. But with time the seals quit and the oil runs out. If you put oil in there now it will probly run out also. I replace that plug with a grease zirk and fill the housing with grease. If it's making noise the bearings are probly shot. The bearings and gear on the other end oil from the oil that is splashed around buy the governor gear and shaft. The shaft never contained oil, it may have some in it from leaking seals on the gear end. hope this helps.
