I would have it welded if it was me.There are some real good welders out there who can do a real fine repair.A friend of mine who is a retired welder fixed a rear housing on a 520 for me a few years ago, have had no problems since. He used a high nickel content rod welding a little at a time being carefull not to get to hot then peening it to soften the weld. hope this helps.

I had a major crack in the transmission housing on my Farmall H after some water froze in it and had it welded. I'm asuming the housing on a John Deere is similar cast metal. The trick is finding a welder who knows how to weld cast iron. I've found there are good welders who can't weld cast, good welders who think they can weld cast and then there are good welders who can weld almost anything metal including cast - you need the last type.

the crack will spread as soon as you put stress on it....better replace the case....

I am not smart enough to make this kind of repair but I imagine since you have to take a lot of the transmission out anyhow, you might be just as well off to get another main case. I would figure the cast is going to be hard to weld and might be more difficult since the cast crack would have soaked in oil forever. Of course it depends on what you plan to do with the tractor and how much you care for it. If the gear replacement won't be that involved, The other thought is you could try the welding and if it doesn't work, do you stand to loose out much?

thanks for the comments, my friend that owns the tractor it was his grandfathers who bought it new. replacing the housing also means losing the serial number. unless how many guys do you think pop off their own tag and swap on a differrent case? thanks
