I have a 73' 400 sled. I couldn't find pistons and rings for the CCW 440 so I had to put another engine in it since the pistons were smoked. I ended up putting a Cauyuna 430 in it. Now it starts on the second pull unlike 20 with the old engine. I put new drive cogs on it 2 years ago. I almost flipped it around a turn. it's so long the back can easily get sideways on you. I ran it the day after christmas until early JAN. when the drive chain flew off. I haven't had time to mess with it yet. Other than that it's a lot of fun. Haven't had any snow since though. Anybody know where I could find new hood decals? On the right side the deer is leaping forward.

When I was in school I bought a brand-new Liquifire 440, mainly because it was one of the quicker sleds around at that point. There weren't many Polaris TX 440's that could keep up with her & it was (at the time) a treat to operate. It wasn't quite as heavy as some of the others and was relatively nimble, even at high speeds. Every now & then I'll see a nice one trail riding & wonder what happened to all of the Polaris, Cats and Doo's of that vintage. Maybe the guy riding it is simply a Deere enthusiast. Fellow let me ride one a few years back up around Tug Hill, still very quick, but they haven't a shadow's chance of handling like the new IFS / long travel suspension models of today. Also had a Spitfire 340 in later years, but that wasn't much of a sled.

I grew up with a '74 600 and a '76 300. We still have the 300 in the shed. I then moved up to a 1980 Liquifire, the best sled Deere ever made. Any Polaris, Cat, or Ski-Doo person will admit that the liquifire was a pretty good sled, maybe not THE fastest, but right up there. Rumor has it around Horicon Wisconsin, were the sleds were buildt, is that they had a 500cc version Liquifire with IFS ready to go before they pulled the plug. I wonder sometimes why the ever got into sleds in the first place? I guess back then, Deere was in all kinds of markets, everything from bicycles to garden rakes.

Hi,

Used to. When I was in High School, I used to race a Liquifire 440. Our familiy business at the time was a JD dealership, and my Uncle thought that racing a JD sled with our own sponsorship was a good way to promote sales in the winter (when sales were pretty dead).

That lasted until JD pulled out of the sled market. I kept the sled for many years, but sold it with the old home when I had to move from upstate NY to NC. All I have left is my official JD snowmobile helmet.

It used to go pretty good. We only raced at the local level, so we didn't have to spend a pile of money trying to stay competitive. It did boost sales traffic in the dealership, so we were successful in that regard. Later on, it also made for a dandy way to respond to fire/rescue calls when the weather turned nasty.

20 years ago, we had a JDX8 snowmobile used, at times, to haul supplies to our cabin in the Sierras. When the roads were plowed, we used them for goofing off on trails and in the meadows. Some of the scariest rides I ever had in my life were on that machine. 40-50 mph in the snow on a snowmobile is a white-knuckle ride...cold too! Makes your nose run.
