Earlier, on the Farmall forum, I asked,"What was the first tractor you operated." "What was the first tractor you've owned?" This question is to permit you to have a plesent thought. Robert Calhoun

Considering, I'm under thirty and at about 10 - 11 years old, the first tractor I DROVE was a Ford 8N and thought that was awesome.

The First REAL (not trying to start anything, but.....) tractor I ever OWNED, was with my father about 5 years ago, a JD 730D RC wide front with a pony motor. Now that was REALLY AWESOME.

And now I've owned a 630 for two years and just cannot seem to get enough.

HMMM. What will be next????? ?

The first tractor I drove was a '41 John Deere B puuling the hay wagon and loader in the summer of 1942. My first tractor was a '53 Super M Farmall I bought in 1979. Now I've got a John Deere GW and a John Deere A, both '48's. I've also got "custody" of my brother's '49 M Farmall.

Robert, Not too much head scratching required here, the first tractor I drove was a Case VAC on thanksgiving day 1953, I was 9 and instantly hooked. 25 years later I got my first tractor, a 1938 Allis Chalmers WC, I still have that one, just can't part with it, even if all the rest are John Deeres. We all get better with practice but that first drive is always special.

First tractor I rode on the tool box was a WD45 and the first tractor I drove was a 1951 WD. Then the first tractor I owned was a 1952 WD. The straight WD's are still in the family and I wish the 45 was still here because that was a real bucking bronco and was fun to work in the field.

First tractor I drove was a Ford Jubilee at 6 yrs old. I was pretty scrawny, had to stand up and pull up on the steering wheel to push in the clutch! Then graduated to my grandfather's A in the cotton field, then my uncle's M Farmall, JD 50, and by 15 was on a JD 720 LP - I thought I was the top dog on the 720. When baling round bales about dusk, the exh. manifold would get bright red when the bale was almost done, then cool down when you dumped the bale.

First owned was a 1952 JD A, currently have an 8n (toy) and a 1955 JD 50 LP (working tractor) here at home. At the farm we have a Long 2610, IH 866, MF 180 and MF 910T.

It is hard to remember exactly when, maybe 1955 or 56, but I remember the tractor a 1944 Model B. I was about 5 years old and we were picking stones. I steered the tractor and stone boat from rock to rock, creeping along in first gear as my Dad and Grandfather walked behind loading the boat. I wasn't big enough to work the clutch, but I wrestled the steering wheel well enough to point it toward the next stone. That tractor is in my shop right now getting the TLC she deserves after almost 60 years of service to the family farm.

That takes me back to when I was about sixteen. We have ground in the Missouri river bottom and in the late sixties, my dad had about 10 acres of cottonwoods cleared. One of the last things he wanted done before he planted corn on that ten acres was to pick up left over wood chunks. We hooked a wagon behind our 50 John Deere and drove around the new ground. Me, my brother who was twelve were picking up chunks with our eight year old sister driving the 50. All she could do was steer, she couldn't begin to work the clutch, so who ever was closest, brother or me would jump on the draw bar to start and stop the tractor. As far as the crappy jobs went on the farm, it was probably a pretty good time. It was the only time all three of us ever worked together like that.HJ

The first one I drove was a 730 LP. The farmer still has it sitting out in back of his barn. I tried to talk him out of it a couple of years ago. No luck. I'm slowly but surely resurrecting a 39 H that has definitely seen better days.

Dad bought a place with 5 acres when I was 13. He then bought an Allis-Chalmers WC and a bush hog. He finally let me run it a year later after a lot of begging and pleading. I thought I was pretty big stuff driving such a "huge" tractor. Wish we could get that tractor back. The first tractor that I owned was a Farmall H. I bought it when I was 15 and since I couldn't drive a car yet I just drove the H all around like it was my car.

The first tractor that I rode on was a 1967 4020. I was two years old so my mom says. My dad was working swing shifts at Procter & Gamble and mom was helping out with corn planting. I wouldnt ever be happy inside the house so she thought that she would take me along. It must have been fun because now you cant get me away from them. The first one that I drove with grandpa's help was a 1951 B. I'll never forget the good ole days riding along with grandpa mowing hay. I do miss him. The first tractor that I drove by myself was our 1976 2440. I remember how scared I was. I think that I was about 7. I could barely reach the clutch. I don't technically own any yet but I'm workin on buying my grandpa's B. I'm a youngin' compared to all the rest of ya guys. Im just 18 and in college. I love tractor restoration. To me there is nothing better than that of the freedom of being in an open field with the wind in your face feeling free. I, like many old timers get a euphoric feeling when I pull up to those Two-Cylinder Club Expos in beautiful Iowa. There are some young people interested however few.

My first tractor was a Olver 60 Rowcrop, paid 35.00 dollars for it, pumped up the tires & drove home. Didn't take long for a 12 year old kid who loved JD's to paint the wheels yellow. I paid for it with the monies I made haying, did some fixen to it & sold for 650.00 & bought a cyclone 50 B, thought I had the world by the tail.RLA

First tractor i drove was in 1996 and it was a 1973 "350" Long....talk about a tough steering rig! The first JD i ran was a 430 W, first hand clutch JD i ran was a 530 (sweet rig!)...my first and only tractor so far is a '37 short frame JD "B" on cutdowns. I love that tractor...kick everybodys butt in the hand fast start...just ask the folks in Terre Haute IN...they still cant belive how quick that B took off! I actually had a guy come up to me and jokingly say that it isnt a JD cuz it starts too good. Well of course being the JD nut i am i mentioned that he just has never seen a JD that wasnt worn in two aparently!!!! Anywho...that what i have run/owned

Yes, this did make for a nice diversion this afternoon!

The first tractor I operated was my dad's '58 JD 420c crawler/dozer. It still sits in my shop. There's no way I'll ever get rid of her. That was my dad's baby. Besides, where would one find such a handy small bulldozer these days? I don't think anyone makes an equivalent machine.

The first tractor I owned myself was a '50 JD M. It was a total basket case. We winched and swept the bits onto a rollback to get it home.

It had been left out with no exhaust cover. When it wouldn't start, the previous owners tried to pull start it with a 4x4 truck. Pulled the front end right off, they did.

Then they just left it sitting in a pile of bits for five years. At least we got it for free. What a mess. Water in all the places there was supposed to be oil. I'm still cleaning rust out of the hydraulic system (and we got it in 1987)!

Anyway, Dad and I decided to rebuild it. We beat, heated, pryed and pulled on all the rusted bits and eventually got it all apart and rebuilt it. It took us two years, but we had her back together again. That was the most fun I ever had working with my dad, since the job didn't *have* to be done. We worked on her when we felt like it.

I still have that one, too. That's the one with the wrong paint job I listed in my Tractor Town entry. Look up Steamer if you want to see her. I still get the same feeling of pride and amazement every time she fires up as I did the first time I heard her pop.

Why it has the yellow stripes is a story that somehow fits the odd life this little M has led. I was working on restoring a 57 420w and wanted to practice masking and painting the yellow stripe, since I'd not done one before.

The M hood had never been completely straightened and sandblasted (having been crinkled somewhat while plowing snow one day with the aforementioned 420c), so I figured to use it as a test subject. It looked much better that way, so I left it alone and just relettered it. Someday, I'll get a straight hood and she'll go back to normal. Or not. I don't think she cares one way or the other.....

Stan
