Ok, I do have the address to this guy and I am going to look at it tomorrow. It is supposed to be a running still original Green 1957 Model M Gas tractor. The guy wants 1,000.00 for it?? Good tires and the narrow (close together) front tires. He said it not all beat up and looks pretty good. Is that a fair price for one? Should it be a lot more or somewhat less. Is this a Good Model to have or is it lemon type? Gasoline engine do not know the HP. Help me out on this one I still want to own a John Deere and I have the chance. Mark H.

I think I followed all these posts to conclude that it's a 1951 MT. They are a nice small tractor but it depends on what you want to use it for. It has it's own 3 point hitch and will require implements made just for the M and MT's. If your buying it to have a JD for the art of collection, then it's worth the money. If you want to use it for different chores, I'd wait for a 40, 420 or 430, with the latter two being even better for a small working tractor, but it's very unlikely you'll find one of these models for $1000.

I can't answer the question about cracked blocks on the M or MT's. Most of the cracked blocks I know about was from the lack of antifreeze.

Dad has a couple of the MT's and one has a seven foot cycle mower. The tractor uses one gallon of gas per hour while mowing. Not bad.

Mark,

Keep us posted on this one before you buy it. All the posts I've seen on here are right - the M and MT series ended in 1952 and were replaced by the 40 series, then the 420 series, which would be right for the 1957 time frame.

The seller either doesn't know what he has or is hoping to find a buyer who doesn't know what he's buying.

Be careful here,

Stan

Stan; It was like pulling teeth I had to get his wife on the phone to find out. The serial # was 32820 and that is supposed to be the 1951 model, it is a MT and he has the Mamual for it. OK now that we know the right info it is also a 2-cylinder Gasoline with a 3-point hitch of some sort ( I did not want to pull any more teeth) If it runs and has good tires what else should I look for and is this a good price range. Is the PTO realy around 14 1/2 hp? Is this a good model for the smaller JDs? Thanks for any help and is it prone to water jacket cracks too? Mark H.

The MT was made from 1949-1952 according to my John Deere book. The M was made from 1947 to 1952. The M has a wide front and the MT has a narrow front. The MT was rated at 14.08 on the drawbar and 18.33 belt hp. This series had a vertical engine and a foot clutch. I think they were probably a good smaller tractor. HTH

Model M's were produced I think from 1947 to 1952.....Don't have a clue as to what a 1957 M is doing.....

I looked at the photos under JD M and only found a 1948 M in front of a Real Big JD. Are there not many of them owned by you guys? Mark H.

Thought I just posted this, but guess I didn't....John Deere M's from 1947 -1952....do not know anything about a 1957 version..... if it has the narrow front and is an "M" it is an MT.....

Mark, I recently bought a little John Deere M. It had a stuck motor, okay tires, came with a plow, two different disks, front blade, cultivators and a bushhog for $500. $1,000 for a decent running one doesn't seem to bad. The only thing is that if it doesn't have 3 pt., it may be somewhat difficult to acquire equipment for. I think these tractors were notorious for the block cracking between water jackets, right under the head. Just between jackets, not into the cylinder. Many are operated today without any problem from that. Just something to look at, see if it looks like it has been taken apart recently, because if it has, and he is now selling it, he may have found a crack. I do believe that a narrow front M was a MT, set up for two rows, where an M is set for one. In farmall terms, an M would be an A, and an MT would be a C. Make sense?

That is making sence, this guy probly dosen't realy know the year! He said he has the book on it and I would learn alot more when I see it??? I hate it when some one is selling something and they do not know the year or model but yet they know it runs real good and they have had it for over 3-years didn't they haft to get a filter, belt, plugs or something during that time?? Mark H.

Well, he may not have ever done any maintenance on it, your right. It could possibly be that his son or someone else maintained it or whatever, and they aren't using it anymore, and he has no need for it. I would pound him for as many questions as ya can. Ifn' he don't know much about it, you might get the price down a little bit for a deal.
