I just returned from Henrys where he was tearing into a 420. I assured him I could make it spark n charge again (he has parts layign everywhere lol) but the problem it has is:

It gets a lot of oil into the coolant (whats drained form radiator looks like you drained the pan) BUT theres no coolant whatosever gettign into the oil, its clean and black and not milky. He didnt see any obvious head or head gasket problems so is looking for a crack in an oil passage where oil under pressure is forcing its way into a water passage.

Any you guys had experience of that on a 420 or know the next place to look???

Thanks n God Bless yall

John T PS Im also posting looking for a 420 engine or block cuz the cylinders and pistons and possibly crank need repair. E Mail jmn50@msn.com with info and condition location and price etc.

John T, I only know enough to be dangerous but I bought a 430W several years ago that supposedly ran well. When I went to check the radiator it had a fair amount of oil in it. I drained and flushed and when I went to try to start it it would belch an oily residue out the fill neck. I pulled the head to check and found it had been bored and sleeved. The only thing I could figure is the top of the sleeves and block were not perfectly flush allowing some oil to leak over under pressure. I checked the head and found OK so ground valves etc. and put on a different block that I had purchased. It now runs perfect and I have a heavy paperweight besides.

John, the pressurized oil passages in that 420 block are well below the block coolant passages & coolant level so the most obvious place would be the head gasket or cylinder head.. There wouldn't be enough pressure in the oil return holes to force oil into the coolant without it going both ways.

~In most cases it's the head gasket on those Dubuque's... If it isn't the head gasket have him get the head pressure tested [there is a drilled oil passage in the rear of the head].. How was the torque on the head bolts when he checked them before removing the head?

~Any chance that someone just poured oil into the radiator?

~It shouldn't be too hard to find the problem as the coolant only gets close to pressurized oil in a few places....

Someone adding oil to the coolant is a very real possibility. I know one fellow who does it in the belief that the oil floating on top of the coolant keeps the oxygen away from the cooling system. Not sure if he is correct, but my faith in that is not enough to make me try it on my equipment.

Thanks for the quick reply Clooney, He will probalby have the head checked first thing including cracks and flatness. The cyliners are in fairly bad shape with some lower scoring marks/ rough ridge like it may have been stuck at one time (though top ridge wasnt all that bad), one piston is flat top other one domed???? (thats surely not correct?) had some broken rings plus the crank throws are questionable lol so not sure yet how we will proceed.

Thanks again, God Bless ya for all the great help you provide. John T
