I took my generator apart that was on my A and was checking the feilds and the armatuer. Should the copper pads on the commutator all show continuity between each other?

Joe, in addition to clooneys answer, there should be NO continuity between the field windigns and case ground (with armature removed and in an ungrounded field set up) because that would indicate an insulation failure. However, a more sophisticated test for insulation breakdown is better while still, if theres a short showing on an ohm meter test in the field windings, she needs repair. With a voltage regulator or light switch controller, the fields are supposed to get their case ground through those devices. The Brush hold down springs need to be free to hold the brushes down also for proper operation. Good Luck Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Joe, yes, but none should show continuity to the main shaft that runs through the armature. The only true way to test an armature is with a growler.

Clooney, thank you for your reply, the fields and armature both have bad insulation on the windings, should I just start over with another generator? Or can I paint something onto the bare spots?
