A while back I read about changing the hydraulic filter and check to see if there were metal grindings from the brake pads.
I misplaced the posting and was wondering if some one would refresh my memory.

If you change the hyd. filter and see some small brass chips or brassy looking material this is normal. If you see a silver metalic color in the oil that comes out of the filter or a silver paste in the bottom of the filter housing you have a problem. If it has been a while, you may want to drain the entire system and clean the cross screen and see if it has any brake pad material on it or in the bottom of the trans. case. The trans./hyd. filter should be changed at minimum every second oil change (200 hrs.)especially on an older tractor. If you want to check the cross screen without draining the trans. heres a trick. Make sure the dipstick is tight, hook the hose of your shop vac to the fill pipe with a clamp and let the vac. run, remove the plug, pull the screen and replace the plug. same deal for installation. You will only lose about a quart or so of fluid this way.

The recommended service interval on your 4010 trans filter is 600 hours. Providing you are using a good filter and a good grade of trans/hyd oil this is often enough. Changing the filter more often just increases the chances of comtaminating the system through the filter housing. We've also seen (in a JD dealership) a lot more brake problem in tractors using COOP trans fluid. We see far fewer problems in tractors using JD HY-GARD. I know COOP is cheaper, and if COOP built tractors I would recommend it for use in them. JD HY-GARD is also formulate to mix with the water than can get in your hyd system instead of floating on top. This prevents pumps that draw off the bottom of the reservoir from getting a shot of water every time the unit is started. Just my 2 cents and good luck with your 4010.
