Just rebuilt carb on my 60. It was dirty inside with very fine rust from gas tank. It seems to be running better in some respects, but can't geet it to idle properly. Also a few times with throtle closed down the engine would take off and run like fast. Had to shut off switch to stop it. The throttle was closed when it did this. Need some help please. Thanks Much.

John, it still sounds like you have some dirt or rust in the idle circuits. I presume you are working with a duplex carb, if not post back & we will address the single.
~There is a chance you will have to pull the little balls that plug off the idle passages but you probably should first try to clean the passages without pulling those balls as they can be a real pain to remove.
~Try to work a little thin wire into the idle first, second & third idle orifices (you will probably have to remove the throttle plates to do that) then flush with carb clean & hit them with the wire & compressed air again. Make sure the vertical idle passages are open (use a little thin wire) & the air bleeds into the idle passages are also open. (the idle passage tends to plug where they intersect with the vertical passage as well as at the idle orifice below the nozzle area) ~Make sure the bowl vents are open & working & allowing air into the vent passages along the top of the carb.
~Make sure the sump fuel strainer is not plugged (under the big nut above the carb fuel inlet)
~You said it takes off & runs fast with the throttle closed, is that with the throttle lever closed or with the carb throttle plates closed also? If the throttle plates are close when that happens you have air entering the throttle or intake system from somewhere.
~There is also a chance you have other problems like low compression or a tight or burnt valve so it wouldn't hurt to run a compression check to eliminate that as a possible cause.

Thanks Clooney. I will pull the carb and do as you say. I put a new sump fuel strainer in when I had it apart the other day along with needle and seat and other o rings and gaskets that come with the kit. Also would it help to replace the idle mixture needles?

John..I had the same problem with my 60.I put some penetrating oil in the little hole and apply some air to it. I was able to see which jet was plugged. I took a piece of #8 strander copper wire. I unravel the wire and took one of the strans of wire and worked it with a pair of needle nose into the hole,it took me about an hour to free/unplug the hole. Be careful not to break the wire off in the hole,Good luck Ben
