1951 A engine oil question

I have a '51 model A that will have a complete engine overhaul as soon as the block comes back from the machine shop. Three days after I bought the tractor I discovered water in the cylinders. It had a blown head gasket but it also had a cracked block. Needless to say I have gone through the entire engine including mains. Here is my dumb question. What oil should I use during break-in and what is prefered oil to run in the tractor after the break-in period? The tractor had a fair amount of sludge and I want to avoid it sludging again. The "A" has .045 M & W pistons and a slight clean up on the head. It won't see much hard work but I will use it some while I restore it. Thanks!

Jim

I asked the same question 9 months ago. I was told by many people to go to Deere and buy there Break in oil. Worked great. Broke the rings in and don't smoke at all. A gallon was like $10.00 But it worked.

My 2 cents.

Snowmantn:

I don't think that's a dumb question at all. You know years ago, all the things I read said to use non-detergent during break-in so that there was a chance for some of the carbon and such to work it's way into the metal pores and the engine parts, particularly rings, could wring in. That's what I've always done.

My dumb question is, when I finish the re-bore/pistons/rings/valve job on my 70 Diesel, should it get non-detergent for the break-in period, even though non-detergent is a no-no in diesels.

Hope someone will answer both of our questions.

Frank, I use John Deere's break-in oil in anything I rebuild, and once the engine has some time on it switch it to a good quality diesel oil, even in a gasoline motor. It keeps all the sludge out of the engine. But do not break in an engine with the diesel oil. I was told by John Deere folks years ago that the diesel oil does such a good job of lubricating that the rings will never seat, and I can vouch for this from firsthand experience. The break-in oil is a good product. Hope this helps. Mike

Frank, they have offered this oil for several years, but not many dealers offer it on the showroom shelf. Most just get it in barrels and use it for the engines they overhaul. Take a container in and get it filled if they don't offer it in smaller containers. (I do know it is available in gallons.) This is the same factory fill oil John Deere uses in their new engines. Yes, it is available in gallon containers, and I have bought several of them. However, in my neck of the woods, not every dealer carries it in gallons, but almost all of them have it in some form. Good stuff. Mike

Dave:

Can you post the title from the jug so I know exactly what to ask for ? My dealer is kind of young.

Appreciate it !
