420 lover, you didn't give us very much information to go on. ~Does it crank slowly or quite briskly? ~Does the choke close all the way? Pull the intake hose & take a look, or see if you can stall the engine with the choke. ~Is the battery old or fairly new? ~Will it start better with a jump or with a battery charger hooked to it? ~Pull a plug wire & see if you are getting a BLUE spark that will jump a 3/16" gap while cranking, if not & you have a volt meter, see what the coil voltage is on the ignition side while cranking, if below 5 run a jumper wire from the starter big post to the coil ignition switch side & check the voltage again, if better & it then starts suspect a high resistance in the ignition circuit such as the switch, if it isn't higher move the voltmeter to the battery posts & see what the voltage on the battery is during cranking, if below 5 suspect a low charge, sulfated battery, or defective battery. If above 5 at the battery & lower than 4.5 at the coil, move the voltmeter to between the big post on the starter & ground & see what you have there, if more than 0.2 volts below battery voltage while cranking suspect the ground cable, cable connections or cable between the battery & starter. ~You could have a defective ignition coil that wouldn't show up in the above tests & that would be hard to diagnose without a coil tester or substituting a new coil (The coil being defective would be a long shot) ~If the cranking voltage is good, the choke is working properly, the coil is producing a good "blue" spark & your gasoline is not old & lost it's light ends, you are left with low compression (do a cold compression test to see what kind of cold compression you have) or a malfunction in the carb (probably the carb is ok due to the fact it runs good once started) ~It might not hurt to put in new spark plugs, wires & points before doing too much, but if you have a good blue spark that will jump a 3/16" gap while cranking with the spark plugs in the engine you probably have a good enough ignition system to start the tractor & should just install new plugs. ~As you probably have figured out by reading this, I have no silver bullet to give you to that will make it start, diagnosing a poor starting engine is difficult enough when actually working on it & trying too do it by E-Mail is almost impossible without ongoing feedback from you. Try some of the things mentioned above then post back as questions arise & we will talk you through getting your tractor to start.
