Actually looking for an older model but am currently looking at a 1948 B no 3pt but a 12v starting system. Paint is nice and bright. Breather is bent, a few minor dents (3 I see) and hood has been cut and bent under around the exhaust for some reason. I am also looking at a 1944 B unrestored but runs good (or so it is said) for 1600. That seemed high to me. What do you guys think? I am a first timer and am trying to get a nice looking hobby/work tractor. We have 10 acres of new ground for our 4-H sheep/goat projects that we plan to put in hay. I have visited and looked at 2 so far but couldn't bring myself to pay more than 2000.00. Am I on track or not?

Eric,

I just bought a handstart 44 B for $1400 (Missouri). It has good sheet metal, a nice paint job (not show quality but from a distance looks new), runs good (after pull starting - needs new magneto .. maybe. still looking into this). Don't know if $1400 was a good price, but I'm happy with it, and that's all that matters to me!

The hood damage would be a major reason to dicker down the price to me. Farmers cut up the hood around the exhaust to change the muffler without removing the hood, which would have been the correct way to do this job. Sheet metal replacement can be one of the more expensive items in a restoration or fix up of your tractor.

The cutting of the hood was a JD thing not the farmers.JD knew they had a mistake and came out with a cover to go over the hole in the hood.I know this to be true because by grandfathers 49 B had the cut out with a cover and four bolts. We fixed it to look one piece again.
