Hello, I have a JD-40 and need to change the transmission and final drive fluids. The manual says to use SAE 90wt oil. Should I use any SAE 90wt oil, or does Deere have a special product.??? Thanks Joe

Green Magazine and Two cylinder have jobbers advertising GL1 gear lube. It lubes via brute viscosity and 140 weight is particularly slow to seap through the common Dubuque leakage spots.

Hey Guys,

I have an MT and when I brought it home, I changed all the fluids, but did a flush prior to that...

Depending on where you live, here is what I would recommend...if where you live it gets real, real cold, then you might want to just stay with 90wt, but I replaced both my tranny and final drives with a 85-140wt and the difference in sound and smoothness is unbelievable...Wayne in TN uses straight 140 in his 40+ series tractors...

I live in texas so I rarely experience the cold issues the guys up north experience...however, the 85-140 should adapt to lower temps unless you get constant 20-30 below temps...try 90, then 85-140wt and she what she like better.. if it is real cold when you refill your tractor, the 85-140 should be left inside your house for the night, because outside ambient temp will make it pour real slow...if you pour 85-140 in cold weather, it's a good upper body workout.

regards,
tom

I also use 85W140 in the gear boxes on my 420 especially the trans/differential. Because it is also rated as a GL5. Dubuque tractors have hypoid gears in the differential like Uncle Bill's pick up has had for decades. Bet you have to dig deep to find a now a day manufacturer of hypoid gears to recommend not using somewhere around a GL 5 rated lube.

Joe, the 90 weight will be fine.. Don't use the 80W90 as that is too thin..

~Because the 40 has a ring & pinion gear [hypoid] you should use something with a little EP additive in it like GL-3 or GL-4.. GL-5 has too much EP in it but that is probably all you are going to be able to find...

Does anyone know of a good source like Walmat or Sam's Club or AutoZone,ETC for the 90 wt GL-3 or 4? I need to change my tranny, too and the last time used the 80-90 wt and would like to get the thicker oil if I can.

Thanks, CPeter
